Drinking water monitoring and analysis is carried out by or on behalf of the sanitary authorities and transmitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) annually. The EPA publishes an annual Drinking Water Quality Report based on this data. It also provides guidance to local authorities on the implementation of the Drinking Water Directive and Regulations, and audits drinking water operations at local authority level.
The European Communities (Drinking Water) (No. 2) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 278 of 2007) were made on 12 June 2007. These regulations transpose outstanding aspects of the EU Drinking Water Directive into Irish Law by underpinning comprehensive supervision and maintenance regimes for both sanitary authority and group water scheme supplies and by providing for increased penalties for non-compliance.
