National Development Plans

The objectives of the Water Services Investment Programme have been an integral part of  National Development Planning under the national Development Plan 2000 – 2006 and the current National Development Plan 2007 -2013. Significant progress has been  made over this time  in the provision of water and sewerage services, including:

  • the completion of some 480 projects, including many very large sewage treatment plants in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and other urban areas
  • an increase in additional treatment capacity equivalent to a population of 3.7 million in the case of sewage and 1.1million in the case of water supply
  • an increase in the rate of compliance with the requirements of the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive from 25% to 92%
  • The continuing high standard in the overall quality of drinking water in Ireland with good progress being made on the elimination of substandard water supplies.
