From 9 January 2013, large buildings (i.e. > 500 m2), which are occupied by public bodies and are frequently visited by the public, are required to display in a prominent position that is clearly visible to the public a Display Energy Certificate in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 14 of the European Union (Energy Performance of Buildings) Regulations 2012. These regulations transpose the requirements in respect of energy performance certification under Directive 2010/31/EU on the energy performance of buildings (recast).

The Display Energy Certificate for the Custom House for 2014 is shown below. The Certificate details the total energy consumed by the Custom House in 2014 (based on utility bills) and rates its energy usage against that of a typical building of its type. A CO2 indicator is also included which details the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the Custom House’s energy consumption. The C3 rating puts the Custom House ahead of a typical building of its class which would normally be rated as a D2.

The Certificate will be updated annually with a view to achieving continuous reductions in energy usage and associated carbon dioxide emissions.
