The Management Board comprises the Secretary General and the six Assistant Secretaries.
It operates in support of the Minister and the Secretary General in their statutorily prescribed roles by
- assisting (together with other arrangements for this purpose) in policy development and coordination;
- monitoring the implementation of policies and programmes by the Department, particularly in relation to issues requiring cross-Divisional cooperation, and
- promoting the development and improved performance of the Department’s organisation through a range of functions, including that of determining/recommending on staff promotions.
John McCarthy - Secretary General
John was appointed Secretary General of the Department in March 2014. Prior to this he served as Assistant Secretary in charge of the Department’s Local Government, Environment and Housing Divisions. He previously served as Principal Officer in a number of the Department’s areas of activity, including affordable housing and waste management. He joined the Department in 1991, having previously worked in a number of other Departments, including the Department of Social and Family Affairs and the Central Statistics Office.
