Mr. Phil Hogan, T.D. Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, today (5/06/2013) announced that he has given approval to Mayo County Council’s proposal to include the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme – Shrah to Westport Extension in the Water Services Investment Programme  2010 -2013 at an estimated cost of €7.1 million.

“This approval will allow Mayo County Council to advance to construction this vitally important project, which will be funded under my Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010 – 2013”, the Minister said.

“Inclusion of this scheme in my Department’s Programme will provide the town of Westport with a high quality water supply, which will support economic growth and facilitate new development, while also preserving environmental and water quality standards,” the Minister added.

“The scheme involves the provision of a new trunk watermain from Shrah to Westport to connect to the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply and represents the most sustainable solution to meet the short / medium term demand increase, particularly to support the job creation by Allergan, in the area.

“It is now a matter for Mayo County Council to advance the scheme to construction as quickly as possible”, the Minister concluded.
